Most people think of memory foam giving them more comfort, so why would you want a harder, or firmer bed? Well, for a start if you're still reading this, you probably think that a firm bed is a good bed (and I agree with you there). If your bed is simply a little too soft, then this is an ideal way of making it firmer. In fact that's what a lot of people use the extra firm designation for. If you can't or don't want to replace your entire bed, then a firm (or soft) piece of memory foam can be a great way to improve the comfort of your bed, and the quality of your sleep.
My advice is to certainly go ahead and buy a Stearns and Foster mattress, but save your self a lot of money and decline the offer of the boxspring.
You will be able to buy cut to size plywood at numerous home improvement centers, usually for merely a couple of cents more than the cost of the stuff. Buying pre-cut wood will greatly cut down your workload, the time you spend on the task, and the troubles of transporting the plywood. You can request the pre-cut lumber as well.
