One answer is to re-use mattress materials as much as possible. In a mattress recycling center the foam, fabric, and wood are separated, baled, and sold to manufacturers. Steel is recycled at a scrapyard or re-used to fabricate other steel products.
Adding to the environmental impact of discarded mattresses is chemical leaching from landfills and the copious energy used to manufacture new mattresses from new raw materials. The volume of pollution and waste is daunting, and a "not in my back yard" reflex in most areas means that it is increasingly difficult to zone land for landfills.
By this time, you should have narrowed down your selection of Stearns and Foster mattress. Now you need to start asking questions. You'll probably like several mattresses but have noticed a big difference in price. Ask the salesperson why and don't accept the oblique: 'the more expensive ones are better'. Get them to be specific. Usually, you pay more because of fancy superfluous details such as silk mattress covers. A mattress covered in silk, alpaca or Damask doesn't make it any better than one covered in synthetic nylon.
